This Sunday we resume our time in Ephesians 6 with the “Armor of God”, by unpacking the second half of verse 17. Initially, the thought was to take The Word and Prayer and do them together this week but I feel it is appropriate to give our full attention to the Word of God the first Sunday of 2013. In the spiritual battles that God’s people face there is no greater weapon (to be more specific, there is no other weapon) to be wielded than the Word of God. Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the Word of God is “living and active” that it is “sharper than any two-edged sword” and that it is able “to pierce to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow” that it supernaturally “discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart”. The Word of God is the mightiest of weapons, so graciously given to us by God. I believe that one of the fiercest attacks on God’s people by the enemy is to dull our affections towards the Word of God. If our affections are dulled then we will not believe it, if we do not believe it then we will not read it, if we do not read it then we will not meditate on it, if we do not meditate on it then we will not memorize it, and if we are not hiding the word of God in our hearts how are we to be conformed to the image of Christ? How are we to stand against our enemy? The Psalmist tells us in 119:11 that he has stored up the Word in his heart so that he might not sin against God. This should be our greatest desire and life’s devotion.

We will consider the “Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God” this Sunday. We will see what it is that gives scripture its power and sharp edges. Finally, we will unpack the function of the Bible in the life of the Christian. Please take some time this week to read through the sermon text and its supporting passages. Also, take some time to look through the articles and resources provide this week. May we begin this new year with zeal and devotion to the Word of God!
